Material and Methods: 1553 males were included in the study in which the FSHQ was examined for construct validity (factorial, discriminatory, and divergent) and reliability (internal consistency and test-retest reliability). Sixty males were re-administered the questionnaire a week later in order to assess test-retest reliability. Eighty-three males also underwent a measurement of erectile function (International Index of Erectile Function-5 item) to provide an assessment of divergent validity.
Factor analysis was performed to assess the underlying domain structure of the questionnaire and to evaluate factorial validity, the degree to which each item is related to the hypothesized domain with which it is associated. In determining discriminatory validity, the ability of each item to differentiate between controls and candidates with known male sexual functional disorder, subjects was assessed by using a between-groups analysis of variance. Internal consistency of the items within each factor was evaluated using the Cronbach’s alpha formula. Test-retest reliability, the stability quotient of each item, was determined by means of Pearson product-moment correlations.
Results: Based on clinical interpretations of a principal-components analysis, a 6-domain structure was identified which included frequency of sexual intercourse, erection, sexual desire, sexual satisfaction, sexual development, and ejaculation. Overall test-retest reliability coefficients were high for each of the individual domains (r= 0.85 to 0.95), and a high degree of internal consistency was observed. The Cronbach alpha value of the scale was 0.79. Good construct validity was demonstrated by highly significant mean difference scores between the patient and control groups for erection and satisfaction subdomains (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: The FSHQ Turkish version, a 20-item questionnaire, has been developed as a brief, multidimensional self-report instrument for assessing the key dimensions of sexual function in men. The FSHQ Turkish version is psychometrically sound, easy to administer, and has demonstrated ability to discriminate between clinical and non-clinical populations.
The results indicate that the FSHQ Turkish version is reliable and valid. Keywords: Sexual and gender disorders, quality of life, reproducibility of resultsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:204-212
