Atypical Histological Structures Observed In The Adrenal Glands Of Adult Guinea Pig

*Yrd.Doç.Dr.,Atatürk Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Histoloji ve Embriyoloji AD, Erzurum Atypical structures that may be found in the adrenal glands of mammals due to embryonic and physiological factors were researched in the adrenalglands of normal guinea pig. For this research the adrenal glands of 17 normal adult guinea pigs were removed and the paraffin slides from these samples were examined under a light microscope. Four different atypical structures were determined:
1. Globular structures whose cells were similar in shape and staining to the paranchymal cells of adrenal cortex were seen in the retroperitoneal adipose tissue outside the capsule in one of the adrenal glands of two animals. The connective tissue fibers surrounding these structures were connected with the capsule of permanent gland.
2. A fusiform region composed of the cells similar to the zona fasciculata-cells was observed in one of the adrenal glands of an animal. Medullar cell cords were seen in the cortical tissue next to this region in the capsule. Besides, the first finding was observed in this gland.
3. The groups of relatively large cells with pale cytoplasm, which began under the capsule stretched into the zona fasciculata were noticed in several spots of the adrenal glands from two animals. These cell-groups were surrounded in some spots by connective tissue fibers and a great number of small cells.
4. Zona glomerulosa was not present in some spots in the adrenal glands of three animals. In these spots, it was observed that zona fasciculata began under the capsule.
The "ratio test" was made to determine the statistical importance of these findings. The fourth finding had statistical importance (p< 0.05).
It was considered that these atypical structures might occur due to bad developments in the embryonic term and/or functional changes. Keywords: Adrenal glands, light microscopy, atypical structure, guinea pigTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 1999, 19:78-84
