Ossicular reconstruction was performed as a second stage operation in 68 cases. 27 of the cases were transformed into an open technique during the 2nd stage operation. Follow-up period was 16 months at average (range was 6 months- 3 years). Of the 68 cases, type-2 tympanoplasty was performed in 38, type-3 in 26 and type-5b in 4 cases. Best result as closing the air-bone gap (ABG) within 20 dB, were obtained in type-5b tympanoplasty cases (100%). Best results as closing the ABG within 20 dB, considering the materials used in ossicular reconstruction, were obtained by the application of autograft or homograft ossicles (72.7%) and cartilage (71.4%). Relative results in cases which plastipore was used were 38.5%. Difference between the obtained results were statistically significant (p<0.05). Exluding the three cases in whom complications developed, our transformation rate to the open technique in intact canal wall tympanoplasty cases which we had staged was 26.1%.Keywords: Staged Canal Wall Up Tympanoplasty, Ossicular reconstruction, TORP, PORPTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 1999, 19:6-12
