aSSK Ankara Eğitim Hastanesi Plastik ve Rekonstrüktif Cerrahi Kliniği, ANKARA Chicken pox is a viral, contagious disease caused by varicella zoster virus. It is common in childhood and generally seen between 5-10 years old of age.
Chicken pox infection generally follows a more serious course in newborns, the elderly and immune suppressed patients. Secondary infection of the resulting skin lesions by staphylococcus or streptococcus is the most common complication. Gross cutaneous defects as a consequence of necrotizing fasciitis may be seen in some instances.
We present two cases of necrotizing fasciitis and subsequent skin defects secondary to chicken pox infection. The patients were successfully treated with serial surgical debridement, split thickness skin grafts, local flaps and local wound care. In addition, we review possible treatment modalities for such cases. Keywords: Chicken pox, skinTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:129-132
