aII. Plastik, Rekonstrüktif ve Estetik Cerrahi Kliniği, Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Objective: The main purpose of this study was to provide an epidemiological analysis of hospitalized and surgically treated lower and mid-facial fractures.
Material and Methods: A total of 58 lower and mid-facial fracture patients treated between May 2001 and August 2003 were included in the study. A retrospective study of the formal files and x-rays were done and general characteristics (e.g., age, gender), etiology, time between trauma, hospitalization and surgical intervention, duration of hospitalization, as well as fracture site features were evaluated.
Results: In general, motorized vehicle accidents were found to be the main etiological factor in 43.1% of patients. For the pediatric age group in particular, falls were found in 40.0% patients to be the main factor. In 43.1%, a single fracture site, and in 56.8%, multiple fracture sites were found. The most frequent anatomical area was found to be the mandible (43.0%).
Conclusion: Maxillofacial fractures referred to our emergency department manifest similar epidemiological characteristics as in other countries. Thus, more consciousness with regard to traffic rules and the use of safety belts should be encouraged. It should always be in mind that the existence of a second fracture site carries a possibility as high as 50%.Keywords: Facial injuries, etiology, maxillofacial injuriesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:51-57
