In the present study we provide some examples of practical gadgets used in various stereological studies and present an introduction to the general features of some commonly used computerized stereological research systems. A brief glance at the references of the present study will show that there is an extensive range of tools beyond those mentioned in this study that have been developed to manage specific problems encountered during stereological investigations. Since the prevailing economical support mechanisms and available laboratory tools are different, it is natural that the problems encountered in individual laboratories and countries are different. Therefore, the present study comprises some of the tools that have been developed by our group and other scientists in our country. The purpose of this review is to suggest some simple and practical solutions to the problems encountered in different types of stereological studies, to give inspiration to researchers who desire to solve their own particular problems in their stereological research, and to emphasize that international studies may be done using cheap and simple tools and gadgets, usually without the need for extra financial support. Keywords: Analysis, photomicrography, laboratory techniques and proceduresTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:672-680
