Maternal Deaths Occured In Hospitals In Ankara Between 1997 And 2000

*** Dr., Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Halk Sağlığı AD, ANKARA Objective: To investigate the maternal deaths that occured at the hospitals in Ankara between years 1997-2000 and were reported to Ankara City Health Directorate.
Materials and Methods: The information about maternal deaths occured at the hospitals in Ankara between years 1997-2000 and reported with “ women and maternal death form” to Ankara City Health Directorate were investigated. 58 cases reported from the hospitals were evaluated with regard to their age, gravida, parity, educational status, whether or not they received prenatal care, the status of pregnancy at the time of death and death causes.
Results: Of the 58 cases, the median age was 30.0, the mean numbers of their pregnancies and alive births were 2.8 and 1.6 respectively. The mean numbers of spontaneous and voluntary abortions were detected 0.4 and 0.1 respectively. 22.4% of the subjects received antenatal care and 1.7% did not. There was no information about the antenatal care for 75.9% of the subjects. Mortality due directly or indirectly to the obstetrical reasons occurred in 90.0% of subjects. For the other 10.0%, mortality were due to the other reasons. 41.8% of the deaths occured (in 42 days) in postpartum period, 23.6% during the delivery, 32.7% before the end of the pregnancy.
Conclusion: The results of this study will direct the evaluation of the studies that the aims to decrease maternal mortality within the city , and provide the necessary modifications.Keywords: Fecundability, Antenatal care, Maternal deathTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:142-147
