Material and Methods: This retrospective study included 69 metastatic brain patients treated with whole-brain radiotherapy at Gulhane Military Medical School, Department of Radiation Oncology between 1993-1996. All patients were treated with a Co-60 teletherapy machine delivering either a10 X 300 cGy or 5x400 cGy regimen accompanied by steroid therapy. The prognostic factors analyzed for their effect on survival were: surgical treatment, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, neurologic functional status and radiation fractionation scheme.
Results: The median survival time for patients below 60 years of age was 4.5 months, whereas for patients over 60 years of age the time was 2 months. Patients classified for performance status as group I (ECOG I-II) and group II (ECOG III-IV) revealed statistically significant differences in survival in favor of Group I. Neurologic functional status, fractionation and surgical treatment was not shown to have a statistically significant effect on survival. Patients who had complete resolution of tumors after therapy evinced a statistically significant survival effect.
Conclusion: We can conclude that performance status before treatment and complete response to therapy are statistically significant prognostic factors upon survival, whilst other factors have not revealed significant survival effects in this retrospective study. Keywords: Brain, metastasis, radiotherapy, prognosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:498-502
