aKalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Kliniği, Siyami Ersek Göğüs, Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Merkezi, İSTANBUL In this article, a novel method termed the “Segmental Coding System (SCS)”, which can be used for the reporting of any type of imaging test, is presented. This method presents specific data obtained from a related imaging mode subsequently as a special formula. The formulae thus obtained consist of numbers, letters, signs and symbols in a compatible and retrievable format that are capable of being processed in a digital environment.
Reports of imaging studies in medical databases commonly rely on descriptions of visible lesions and anatomy utilizing the narrative technique. However, data output that is in the form of narration and free-text have certain disadvantages for both writer and reader. In addition, such narrative reports seldom lend themselves to processing by computer.
In this article, a novel method for reporting of any type of imaging test is presented. This method, called the SCS, presents data obtained from a specific imaging test subsequently as special formulae. These formulae are produced by using numbers, letters, signs and symbols. A typical formula comprises four different fields, separated by a “:” sign. In the first field, each datum (condition) to be presented is symbolized as an abbreviation and sequence number. In the second field, the subject or anatomic region related to this datum or condition is recorded. In the third field, a “score” and/or coordinate information pertaining to this condition is given. Score information might be a measurement value, grading or a descriptive phase according to the chosen condition. Coordinate information, which is very important for imaging techniques, is supplied by using an inherent mapping system. By using this mapping system, exact anatomical locations can be given. In the fourth field, other supportive information is entered.
The output of a report supplied by SCS presents systematic information in a precise, compact and readily understandable format. In addition, this method offers great advantages in data retrieval and processing for a variety of research and statistical study-types.Keywords: Imaging, formulation, coding, data reporting, diagnosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:525-533
