Foot Care In Patients With Diabetes
Dr.Özer ARICAN,a Dr.Sezai ŞAŞMAZa
aDermatoloji AD, Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAHRAMANMARAŞ Diabetic foot and the amputation are significant socioeconomic problems in the diabetic patients. It has been argued that 85% of diabetic problems can be prevented by necessary precautions. It is also easy to stop these problems by training the patients. In this article, diabetic foot was investigated by means of its socioeconomic effects and the risk factors were evaluated. Moreover, we discussed how to train people to take care of their own feet and emphasized the crucial points on patient training. Patients must take care of their feet daily. Feet must be washed with warm water and dried neatly. Moisturizers may be suggested if the skin is so dry. Cotton socks should be preferred. Patients should not walk without wearing socks and should prefer to use large shoes which fit their feet. Wearing shoes with high-heels and open-edges should be avoided. Having some little objects (like tiny rocks) in the shoes causes high risk for the feet. Because of this, shoes should not be worn unless they are checked. Feet should be kept away from hot water and hot objects. A thermometer should measure the temperature of the water. Nails should be cut in a straight manner regularly with a nail-trimmer. Patients should not try to treat the lesions like callus, corn or warts in their feet by themselves. For each suspected lesion on the feet or legs, patients should consult a doctor. It should be specifically emphasized that early diagnosis and treatment can prevent amputation. As there are not enough podiatrists in our country and people are not well informed about foot-care, it will be more efficient if all doctors try to inform their patients about possible problems. Such cooperation not only will increase the life quality of patients but also will be beneficiary for the national economy. With the advent of growing population of old people in our country, all doctors should share this responsibility. Before it gets worse, this problem should be understood and relevant solutions should be put in practice. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, diabetic foot, educationTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:541-546
