Material and Methods: Tissue samples of 20 patients (ages 3-14) undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy due to recurrent tonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy in Otorhinolaryngology Department, Hacettepe University Medical Faculty Hospital, were obtained as partial surgical specimens apart from routine patholojic examination. Tissues were stained for CD45, CD45RA, CD53, CD146, CD5, CD55, CD52, and fibrinogen monoclonal antibodies by using the indirect immunoperoxidase technique.
Results: We observed no prominent immuno-phenotypic differences in epithelial and stromal cells of the palatine and nasopharyngeal tonsils. However, a weaker molecular expression of antigens was observed in nasopharyngeal lymphoid cells. Also, lymphocyte infiltration was more prominent in palatine tonsils than in nasopharyngeal tonsils. Additionally, specific and previously unreported immune reactivity of CD53, CD146 and CD52 and fibronogen was detected and discuised.
Conclusion: Although the immunoreactivity observed in both tonsils was similar in the cellular aspect, we conclude that differences in the reactive intensity between nasopharyngeal and palatine tonsils were evidentKeywords: Palatine tonsil, nasopharyngeal tonsil,
