Rathke’s Cleft Cyst Rupture As The Cause Of A Granulomatous Reaction: A Case Report

A 62 year-old female was submitted to our hospital because of progressive visual deficiency. Bitemporal hemianopsia was detected and a 4x3 cm mass with contrast enhancement was found in the hypophysial region by radiological examination. The patient was operated upon with the prediagnosis of hypophysial adenoma. Histopathological examination revealed granulomatous hypophysitis due to a Rathke’s cleft cyst rupture. Granulomatous hypophysitis, an inflammatory diseases of the pituitary gland, is infrequently encountered in the literature and is rarely caused by rupture of a Rathke’s cleft cyst.Keywords: Pituitary gland, granulomatous hypophysitis, Rathke’s cleft cystTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:421-424
