The Doctor-patient Relationship: The Position Of The Patient In The Decision-making Process

The doctor-patient relationship has recently attracted renewed interest. Creating a good inter-personal relationship, exchanging information and making treatment-related decions are the principal purposes of effective doctor-patient communication. The philosophy of building a partnership between the doctor and patient is being frequently addressed. Upon close examination of this relationship, several modes of interaction between the doctor and patient have been recognized. The paternalistic, the informed and the shared approaches are models commonly described. As a consequence of many factors (e.g., universal health care challenges, patient rights concerns, educational developments, etc.) “patient participation in medical decision making” has become an important aspect in this relationship. A review of the various interaction types and a consideration of the subject of sharing medical decisions with patients should be beneficial in defining this relationship.Keywords: Doctor, patient, communication, decision-makingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:411-415
