Material and Methods: 193 randomly assigned senior students of Karamursel Maritime School completed a questionnaire consisting of 18 questions inquiring about their knowledge and behaviour concerning STDs (6 females (3.1%) and 187 males (96.9%); mean age 21.07 ± 1.23 years).
Results: According to the given answers,” transmission of disease" was considered the main (86.5%, n=167) risk of unsafe sex. Reference for students’ problems concerning sexual matters were mostly reported to be “friends” (32.6%, n=63). More than half of the students (63.7%, n=123) reported that they had been engaged in sexual activity; although 109 (88.60%) of them knew at least one method for prevention of STDs transmission only 66 (60.55%) of them consistently used it during their sexual activity.
Conclusion: We suggest that, the young population should be provided health education that features STDs knowledge and prevention. Keywords: Sexually transmitted diseases, adolescent, knowledge, behaviour, educationTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:345-349
