cŞişli Etfal Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, İSTANBUL Objective: The World Health Organization and other international committees have defined various obesity categories according to waist circumference “action levels”. The purpose of our study was to compare carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) in female patients with essential hypertension in these obesity categories.
Material and Methods: Hypertensive female patients with waist circumference action levels 2 (n=52) and 1 (n=20) participated in this study. Waist circumference was measured midway between the lower rib and iliac crest. Carotid-femoral PWV was measured using an automatic device, the coplior (Createch Industrie, France).
Results: Patients with action level 2 were compared with those with action level 1, respectively. Neither PWV (12.28±2.42, 13.09±2.52 m/s; p=0.22), age (53±9.9, 58.4±10.6 years p=0.09), systolic blood pressure (151.92±13.50, 155.00±14.04 mmHg; p=0.40), diastolic blood pressure (89.32±11.11, 88.00±12.07 mmHg; p=0.67) nor heart rate (77.25±6.12, 79.65±6.36 pulse/s; p=0.15) were significantly different. The patients with action level 2 manifested higher BMI measurements than those with action level 1, as expected (29.20±3.12, 27.33±2.90; p=0.02).
Conclusion: The carotid-femoral PWV does not show significant differences between patients with waist circumference action level 1 and action level 2. These findings indicate the necessity of utilizing similar secondary preventive measures for female patients with hypertension and for those exhibiting varying levels of obesity. Keywords: Pulse wave velocity, waist circumference, hypertensionTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:332-335
