Material and Methods: MDA was determined with the Hunter method. Cupric sulfate and hydrogen peroxide was used for the oxidation of sera.
Results: Serum MDA levels were higher in pre- and post-hemodialysis as well as in peritoneal dialysis patients when compared to those of controls. There was no significant difference between the predialysis, postdialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups (predialysis: 5.9 ± 1.4 μmol/L ; postdialysis: 7.3 ± 3.2 μmol/L , peritoneal dialysis: 6.5 ± 2.2 μmol/L; and control: 3.8 ± 0.6 μmol/L; p<0.01, p<0.0001, p<0.001, respectively). After oxidation of the sera, MDA was significantly higher in the postdialysis group than in the predialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients (p=0.002, p=0.0002, respectively). There was no significant difference between predialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups. However, MDA levels were higher in predialysis, postdialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups than controls (predialysis: 8.9 ± 3.9 μmol/L; postdialysis: 14.3 ± 7.5 μmol/L; peritoneal dialysis: 7.6 ± 3.9 μmol/L and control: 4.0 ± 0.4 μmol/L; p<0.01, p<0.0001, p<0.05, respectively).
Conclusion: Oxidative stress was higher in both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups than controls, but there was no significant difference between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups. However, susceptibility to oxidation was increased significantly in postdialysis group when compared with predialysis and peritoneal dialysis groups. Keywords: Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, oxidative stress, susceptibility to oxidation, malondialdehydeTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:316-322
