General features of 189 lung cancer patients diagnosed in the Chest Clinic of Ankara Social Security Hospital between January 1996- December 1996 were studied retrospectively. On the chest x-ray, the lesion was centrally localised in 69 cases(%37.2), peripherally localised in 52 cases (%28.1) and localised both centrally and peripherally in 64 cases (%34.5). A mass lesion was the type of lesion most commanly encountered on the chest x-ray and was present in 116 cases (%62.3). Thorax Computed Tomograhpy (CT) findings showed a mass lesion in 107 of the cases (%59.4), the most common lesion site being the right upper lobe; as seen in 44 of the patients (%24.4). Mediastinal involvement was demonstrated on thorax CT’s in 52 cases (%28.8). %93.1 of the patients were diagnosed histopathologically. The most frequently seen histopathological type was squamous cell type, found in %46.0 of the cases. The histopathological diagnosis was achieved by bronchoscopic methods in 106 cases (%60.2). 36 patients (%19.8) were considered as operable and were reffered to surgery for thoracotomy.
