Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a serious complication frequently detected in various patient groups under stress. Several studies showed that thyroid functions may have an affect on the development of stress ulcer.
The aim of this study is to investigate whether thyroid hormones and famotidine given before stress can be effective in prevention of gastric mucosal lesions and to compare this with the effect of famotidine given during stress.
In this study, 50 rats were included. The rats were divided into 5 groups consisting of 10 animals in each. Each group underwent starvation for 24 hours without water restriction followed by an immobilization period of 6 hours. In group I, T3 was given before stress whereas in group II T4 and in group III famotidine were given before stress. In group IV, famotidine was given at the beginning of the stress and continued during the stress period. In group V, no medication was given. All the rats underwent laparotomy and the gastric mucosal lesions were examined. There was no significant difference between the groups which had received T3, T4 and famotidin for 2 days before laparotomy. No statistically significant difference was found between the group I,II,III and the group that was given famotidine during the stress period (p>0,05). The comparison of gastric mucosal lesions in these four groups with the control group, revealed a statistically significant difference (p<0,001).
As a result, administration of thyroid hormones or famotidine which is widely used shortly before stress was found to be as effective as administration of famotidin during stress.
