Immunology Of Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a multi-organ disease which especially affects the lung, eye, RES and skin. It is characterized by noncaseificated granuloms consisting of epitheloid cells and lymphocytes. The advances in the knowledge of the immune system and it’s mediators seen in the recent years, have made immune methods useful in evaluating pulmonary diseases. Most of the information about the immune mechanisms in sarcoidosis has been gained through BAL studies. By the means of cell cultures by monoclonal antibody techniques, pure recombinant cytokines and molecular probes for their genes, it is now possible to study T helper cells and macrophages and their contributions to gra-nuloma formation. With the immunologic analysis of BAL cells answers to the fundamentals questions related to the factors that lead to end-stage pulmonary fibrosis which can be seen in 20% of the patients are being searched.
