It is well known that serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) proportionally increases with age, prostatic volume and volume of cancerous tissue.
In this study, it was aimed to investigati the effect of age on PSA and reference intervals related to age.
Reference values were found as 0.0-4.00 ng./mL. in 40-49, 0.0-6.30 ng./mL. in 50-59, 0.0-7.40 ng./mL. in 60-69, and 0.0-8.85 ng./mL. in 70 or older years of age. The coefficient of age on determining PSA was found to be (r=0.57).
As a conclusion, the use of reference PSA values related to age increases the determination of prostate cancer confined to prostate tissue.
