This study was carried out to demonstrate the effects of foundry dust in the lungs of foundry workers. 84 workers were included in the study, their mean age being 34±3 years and the means exposition period 10±4 years. The workers were divided into two groups according to the nonspecific dust and quartz concentrations in the breath air zone of working medium. Group-1 included the 36 workers who worked in an environment with a dust and quartz concentration below MAC (Maximum Allowable Concentration); Group-2 included the 48 workers who worked in a dusty environment whose dust and quartz concentration was above MAC. 32 Controls were also included in the study showing similar demographic characteristics with the foundry workers but who were not exposed to any kind of respiratory irritant (Group-3). Dyspnea was the commonest respiratory symptom encountered in the foundry workers and was found in 35 workers (41.6%). It was found in 14 people (38%) in Group-1 and 21 people (43.7%) in Group-2. 15.4% of the foundry workers exhibited findings associated with silicosis in their chest x-rays. This ratio was 18.7% in Group-2 with a heavy quartz exposition, whereas it was 11% in Group-1. Statistically significant differences were found (p<0.05) between Group-1 and Group-2 regarding the lung function test parameters associated with the small airways and between Group-1 and Group-3 in all parameters except VC and FVC. It was concluded that significant clinical, radiological and functional effects were seen in foundry workers due to nonspecific dust and quartz exposition in their working environment.
