The hemodynamic effects of caudal anesthesia which was used as supplement to general anesthesia were investigated in the pediatric patients in this retrospective study. Three hundred pediatric patients with an age range 0-2 years were included and divided into two groups, equal in number.
First group received caudal anesthesia with 1 ml/kg of 0.25% bupivacaine in addition to the general anesthesia. The second group received general anesthesia only.
Systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) arterial pressures and heart rates of all the patients were noted at intervals of ten minutes during a period of 110 minutes before and after induction.
The measurements of SAP and DAP were found to be significantly lower in the first group between 30-60 minutes and 10-100 minutes respectively (p<0.05). Heart rates were similar in both groups (p>0.05).
In conclusion; caudal anesthesia as supplement to general anesthesia hinders hemodynamic reactions to surgical stress.
