The efficacies of the two different methods used to protect body temperature during surgery were compared in the neonates. Two groups each consisted of 14 neonates were included in the study. Warm cotton wrappings were applied on the extremities and heads of the patients in the first group. Radiant heater was used in the second group. Induction and maintenance of anesthesia were the same in both groups.
Core temperature was measured using esophageal probe preoperatively, at the beginning of laparotomy and at intervals of 30 minutes for a total of 5 times. Body temperature was not changed significantly in both groups in any intervals (p>0.05). There were no significant differences of the values obtained at the same time between two groups (p>0.05).
Finally, we concluded that both methods are equally effective for protection of body temperature in neonates during surgery.
