The Importance Of The Concentration Of Serum Calcium Fordetermining Of Hypoparathyroidism After Thyroidectomy

In 136 Euthyroid benign multinodular goiter patients who underwent bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy without ligation of the inferior thyroid arteries the concentrations of serum total calcium were examined preoperatively and in the first, second and third days postoperatively. Also the patients were checked for clinical signs of hypoparathyroidism.
All of patients the first postoperative day a decrease of calcium could be observed. But this decrease, in seventy-one percent of all patients occured in the normal limits. None of the cases showed the clinical signs of hypocalcemia. In the early diagnosis and treatment of hypoparathyroidism after thyroid surgery, the control of the concentration of serum total calcium is a method both cheap and easy and dependable.
