In this study, we investigated that the short-term effects of salbutamol which is a symphathomimetic agent, ipratropium bromide which is an anticholinergic agent and combination of these drugs as placebo controlled in 45 patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The baseline parameters were meassured for each patient, then drugs were administrated by inhalation and sistolic-diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate and spirometric parameters were determined at 10., 30., and 120. minutes. We observed that especially combinde therapy resulted in statistically significant increases in blood pressure at each time internval. Salbutamol caused statistically significant increase in pulse rate at 30. min, combined therapy also caused an increase at 10., 30. and 120. minutes. On the other hand, while combined therapy and salbutamol caused prominent increases in pulmonary function parameters at each time interval, ipratropium increased only 30. and 120. minutes. In conclusion, we thought that both salbutamol and ipratropium bromide can be reliably used by inhalation in treatment of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and salbutamol must be preferred in acute cases since its broncholidator effect starts earlier. In addition, combined therapy is more effective on respiratory functions than one drug usage.
