Rheumatoid changes may occur in synovial tissues of hand and wrist (especially tendon sheats and bursae) other than joints in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Ultrasonography (US) can determine soft tissue abnormalities such as soft tissue swelling, effusion, tenosynovitis, bursitis, nodules quantitatively. This study was designed to reevaluate effectiveness of US in diagnosis of rheumatoid changes in hand of patients with RA and during follow-up period.
Synovial sheats thickness of second and third phalengeal flexor tendons of 35 patients followed as RA and 30 healthy persons were measured and then plain radiograms were taken. US examinations were repeated at third and sixth months. Ultrasonographic results were compared with radiograpihc fin-dings and results of control group.
Tendon sheats thickness difference between RA patients and controls was significant (p<0.01). In follow-up period tendon sheats thickness’s changes were correlated with clinical improvement.
US is a cheap, noniinvasive and easy to use method in diagnosis and management of RA patients, both at acute and chronic stages.
