The Frequency Of Smoking In Various Areas Of Ankara?s Citizens And The Dyspepsia In Those Who Smoke

This research is based on a questionnaire which cover 1884 people different classes living in Ankara. Such correlations like smoking cigarette and age, sex, educational background, housing, occupation, an income are being investigated in this study. The dyspepsia of these who smoke is beign researched.
In this study, 58.6% of the subjects (1104 persons) were males and 41.4% of the subjects (780 persons) were female, 49.3% (929 persons) of the subjects were smokers, 50.7% (955 persons) of the people were non-smokers. Of the 1104 males, 57.3% (633 persons) were smokers, and 780 females with a like 37.6% (296 women) were also smokers. In our research, the rate of smoking was higher in males than females (p<0.001).
While the dyspepsia rate was 37.2% (346 persons) in smokers, in non-smokers this rate was 23.8% (227 persons). The dyspepsia rate in smokers, with respect to non-smokers, was 1.9 times more (p<0.001).
The cigarette smoking problem, which is one of the important public health calamitres of the world and Turkey, owing to anti-smoking compaigns and special study programs in the last ten years and certain adjustments through law in advanced countries, has been remarkably lessened.
This research also indicates that in Turkey, which is a developing country, the rate cigarette smoking has stil been very high.
