Different activation methods are being used to support electroencephalography (EEG) as the only dynamic laboratory method for epilepsy diagnosis. Hyperventilation (HV) is the oldest and a common method.
EEG records were taken with 3 minutes HV and without any provocation on 103 patients which were diagnosed 68 generalized convulsion and 35 temporal epilepsy clinically.
Epileptic discharge were seen on 54 of 103 patients (52.4%) with nonprovacotive EEG. HV added extra electrophysiological diagnosis 13.3% in generalized convulsions, and 14% in temporal epileptics.
HV caused a high percentage of activation (GC: 33.8%, TE: 25.7%) on generalized convulsions and new activity occurance on temporal epilepsy (GC: 39.1%, TE: 55.5%).
HV caused EEG activation in two epilepsy groups which was not significant statistically (p=0.200).
