Coronary Artery Surgery In Young Adults (early Results)

Ten patients aged 45 years or less underwent coronary artery bypess graft surgery between January 15. 1994 and January 15. 1995. Eight patients were male. 2 female. Mean age was 42.5 (32-45) years, risk factors were essentially smoking (70%), history of myocardial infarction (80%), obesity (60%) and positive family history (60%). Five patients had single-vessel disease. 3 had double-vessel disease and 2 had three-vessel disease. Thirteen saphenous vein and 10 IMA distal anastomoses were performed, an average of 2.3 grafts per patients. THere were no operative deaths. Cardiac support using inotropic medication was indicated in 2 patients (20%). Postoperative complications occurred in 3 patients (30%). Ventricular tachycardia in two and duodenal perforation in one. Overall survival was 100% at 20 weeks. In conclusion, coronary revascularization can be performed at a reduced risk in younger patients.
