The Ultrastructure Of Kidneys On Experimental Diabetes Mellitus And The Improving Effects Of Selenium

In this study we aimed to investigate the renal ultrastructural pathological alterations in streptozotocin-included diabetic rats. THe major findings resulting from diabetes mellitus were the thickening of glomerular and tubular basement membranes and the proliferation of the mesengial cells. The other findings we observed were glycogen accumulation and increased vacuoles and lysosomes in the cytoplasms of the tubular cells. We observed the positive improving effects of selenium on these findings except the thickening of basement membranes.
