Value Of Ultrasonography In The Diagnosis Of Acute Appendicitis

During a 3-month period from March to June 1994 ultrasonography was performed on 83 patients hospitalized for suspected acute appendicitis at the Emergency Service of Ankara Numune Hospital. The sonographic findings were compared with the clinical follow-up, operative findings and pathologic outcome. Ultrasonography suggested the correct diagnosis in 55 patients with a false positive rate of 4.8% and false negative rate of 28.9%. It had a sensitivity of 0.64, specificity of 0.75 and an accuracy of 0.66.
Ultrasonography must be considered as a radiologist-dependent technic complementing the clinical diagnosis but not superior to surgeon?s experiences.
