Necrotising enterocolitis a major cause of mortality and morbidity is encountered in 1-7.5% of all patients admitted to neonatal intensive care units. Two to six percent of all premature infant deaths is due to necrotising enterocolitis. If effects mostly sick premature infants on days 3-10 postnatally. This clinical entity represents the final response of the immature gastrointestinal system to mucosal injury subsequent to several predisposing factors accompained by the presence of bacteriae and substrate. Prognosis may be altered by prompt recognition of the earliest signs such as increase in gastric residual content, blood in the stool and mild abdominal distention. Treatment consists of antibiotherapy, prolonged cessation of enteral feeding, total parenteral nutrition, and surgical intervention as necessary. It is crucial to be cautious in feeding the high risk infants and early diagnosis is of great importance.
