In the present study, erythrocyte ATP and 2,3-BPG levels of alcohol consumers were investigated in order to determine the effects of alcohol on erythrocyte metabolism. Alcohol consumers were consisted of 46 cases aged between 24-62 (mean 38) years. They had been drinking for at least three years and once a week. Controls were consisted of 32 healthy subjects between the same range of age. Erythrocyte ATP and 2,3-BPG levels of the drinkers were significantly lower than those of controls. Those reductions were thought to results from the inhibition of glycolysis by alcohol which results in an impairment in tissue oxygenation and normal erythrocyte functions.
