Endotelin (ET) is a potent vasoconstructive which has 21 amino acid peptide. Supsequent analysis of ET genes revealed the existence of three similar but distinct ET genes encoding different mature ET sequences that have been designated as ET-1, ET-2 and ET-3. These three isoforms are distributed widely in many tissues in different proportions. ET not only has a vasoconstructive action but also other functions, including vasodilative action, cell proliferating action, and diuretic action, among others. THe diversity of the pharmacological actions of ET has also been ascribed to a wide distribution of ET receptors in different cells.
