Superantigens

Superantigens are important structures that have been studied intensively in recent years. Superantigens are bacterial, mycoplasmal, viral and retroviral proteins which can activate more potently and a larger proportion of T cells than the normal antigens and probably play a role in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. In this review, the different types of superantigens, how they activate T cells, immune response after activation and the role of the superantigens in the etiopathogenesis of some diseases, will be discussed.
