The frequent use of radiologic imaging studies has been associated with the incidental detection of mass lesions in the liver. Furthermore, technical advances in screning modalities have led to identification of small lesions. Patients may be symptomatic or asymptomatic, and the relationship between symptoms and hepatic lesions may be difficult to corroborate. One is then left to formulate an appropriate course, which may include further imaging study, diagnostic laparoscopy, observation or therapeutic intervention. Malignant tumors will more often require further diagnostic tests (serologic and radiologic) to plan appropriate therapies. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary malignant tumor of the liver most often associated with cirrhosis. The most common benign tumors are hepatic adenoma, focal nodular hyperplasia and cavernous hemangioma.
