Very reactive and dangerous formations, known as free radicals, can be produced through many endogenous and exogenous ways such as natural metabolic events, medicine metabolites, electron transport chain, non-enzymatic ways, radiation and pollution (like cigarette).
THis reactive species found in tissues as both intracellular and extracellular can interact with membrane lipids, sulfhydryl groups containing enzym, nucleic acids, carbohydrate and proteins. Lipid peroxidation chain reactions start especially as a result of interaction with lipids. Sugar-side of DNA can be damaged as a results of interaction with free radicals and mutation may occur.
In biological systems, some protective enzymatic system againgst free radicals, superoxide, hydrogenperoxide and hydroxil radicals-induced damage dependent on radiation have been presented.
