Function and numbers of natural killer (NK) cells are affected by exercise training, surgery, acut myocardial infarction, hypoxia and hypovolemic shock. NK cell cytotoxic activity (NKCA) may be enhanced by regular aerobic exercise. Effect of such an exercise on NKCA is not clear in 13-15 age group. In this study growth hormone, basal NKCA and basal cortisol levels in 13-15 year-old athletes and sedantary controls were investigated. We found no significant difference with respect to NKCA; however plasma growth hormone and cortisol levels were found to be higher in study group than control group. We suggest that regular exercise does not enhance NKCA and high level cortisol decrease the effect of exercise on NKCA.
