The Management Of Iron Defıcıency Anemıa In The Elderly
Dr.Erkan ÇOBAN,a Dr.Ayşen TİMURAĞAOĞLUb
aİç Hastalıkları AD, bHematoloji AD, Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANTALYA Anemia is a common problem among the elderly, and its prevalence increases with age. In patients aged 85 years and more, the prevalence of anemia ranges between 27 to 40% in men and 16 to 21% in women. Anemia should never be accepted as a normal physiological response to aging. Chronic disease and iron deficiency are the most common causes of anemia in the old. In most patients, iron deficiency anemia is due to chronic gastrointestinal blood loss. The serum ferritin level is the most effective diagnostic test for detecting this anomaly. A level less than 15 ng/ml is definitive. Iron deficiency is unlikely if serum ferritin is higher than 100 ng/ml. In older patients, gastrointestinal system malignancies are frequently associated with iron deficiency anemia. Therefore, especially in this patient subset, such anemias require extensive investigation. In addition to treatment of the cause of bleeding, iron replacement should be initiated. The usual recommended dose of oral elemental iron is 100 to 200 mg/day.Keywords: Iron deficiency anemia, elderly patient, managementTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:267-270
