Organ And Tissue Transplantations:results And Recommended Strategies In Turkey
Dr.Tamer EDİRNEa
aAile Hekimliği Kliniği, Kırıkkale Kadın Doğum ve Çocuk Hastanesi, KIRIKKALE Despite the increasing number of patients on the waiting lists for organ transplantation, there has been no concomitant increase in the number of organ donations. For this reason, standards and priorities need to be established in order to increase the number of live donors, to allocate the scarce number of organs for transplantation, as well as to implement this procedure nationwide. This allocation system needs to be based on sound scientific criteria and should reflect a balance of justice and utility. Three considerations are of priority:
1) The concept of “brain death” must be defined. Legislation is needed to establish brain death as a legal criterion for organ donation.
2) A system must be established to coordinate the development of organ allocation policy and to ensure equitable distribution.
3) Government oversight and non-governmental organisation must be involved and coordinated. Keywords: Organ and tissue transplantation, brain death, organ donationTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:261-266
