aAcil Tıp AD, Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANTALYA Objective: Nasocomial infections are important causes of mortality and morbidity. The most important preventive method for nasocomial infection is hand washing. Emergency department patients are prone to nasocomial infections due to the overcrowding and complexity of emergency departments. The aim of our study is to determine the prevalence and patterns of hand washing among health care workers in emergency department setting.
Material and Methods: In this observational prospective study, 5 different observers used a standardized study form to obtain data as, the type of patient contact, characteristics of the health care workers, existence of hand washing, the duration of hand washing. Descriptive tests and Pearson Chi-square were used for statistical analysis.
Results: Hand washing were observed on 99 (21%) of the 487 contacts. There were no significant differences among health care workers in hand washing frequency (p>0.05). The frequency of glove usage and hand washing after contacts with glove were 38% and 28%, respectively. The mean time of hand washing was 9.3 seconds.
Conclusion: We figured out that the frequency of hand washing among emergency department personnel was lower than the previously reported articles while the mean time of hand washing was similar. To improve the attitudes of hand washing according to international guidelines, hospital administrators should take all the necessary precautions to reduce nasocomial infections and try to put them into practice. Keywords: Emergency department, hand washingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:235-242
