Congenital Ectopic Nail: Case Report

Congenital ectopic nail, also known as ‘onychoheterotopia’, is a rare clinical entity. Although various etiologies have been proposed, a consensus has yet to be reached. In a case with ectopic nail of the ring finger, the deformity has been corrected by the reconstruction of the nail bed. A 24 year-old female patient presented with a congenital ectopic nail on the ulnar side of the 4th digit. Ectopic nail (4x4) mm2 was located just ulnar to the normal nail. The normal nail had grown over the ectopic one. The normal nail bed was deformed on the ulnar side due to continuous pressure by the ectopic nail. Long-term follow-up revealed satisfactory aesthetic appearance and functional nail bed.Keywords: Hand, finger, ectopic nailTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:185-188
