aÇocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları AD, Çocuk Endokrinolojisi ve Metabolizma Hastalıkları BD, Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAYSERİ Maturity-onset diabetes of the young, (MODY) is a clinically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by nonketotic diabetes mellitus, an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance, an onset usually before the age of 25 and frequently in childhood or adolescence, and a primary defect in the function of the beta cells of the pancreas. Separating typical type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) into phenotypic subgroups has proved difficult. Single gene defects account for only around 5% of T2DM in most populations. The most common single gene disorder is MODY, which was originally described as familial, young onset non-insulin dependent diabetes. However, the term is now used to describe monogenic forms of diabetes of β-cell origin. Considerable progress has been made over the last 10 years in defining the genes and phenotypes involved. In contrast to T2DM genes, MODY genes were relatively simple to identify because of the young age of onset, which enabled the collection and close study of multigenerational families. In this study, a review of MODY is presented. Keywords: MODY, type 2 diabetesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:167-172
