Objective: A retrospective study was conducted in 98 adult patients with esophageal foreign bodies to assess the characteristics of said foreign bodies, methods of treatment and complications.
Material and Methods: From January 1990 through June 2002, 98 adult patients were treated for esophageal foreign bodies. We retrospectively reviewed the hospital records of patients at Dicle University School of Medicine, Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. In all patients, rigid esophagoscopy was done under general anesthesia.
Results: There were 62 female (63.3%) and 36 male patients (36.7%). Mean age was 52.8 (range, 17-80). The main symptoms complained of were odinophagy and sensation of impaction. The location of the foreign bodies was in the cervical esophagus in 82.7% cases, in the thoracic in 11.2% and in the distal esophagus in 3.1%. The most common objects found were bone, bone in meat and meat (67.3%). Esophageal foreign bodies were removed under general anesthesia by rigid esophagoscopy or under direct vision by laryngoscope. Surgical removal was performed in 2 patients. There were 3 esophageal perforations due to esophagoscopy and one due to delay on admission. Mortality was not seen.
Conclusion: Clinical history and patient symptoms were the most valuable elements in determining patient eligibilty for esophagoscopy. Due to the possibilty of potentially life-threatening complications, early recognition and treatment is essential for esophageal foreign bodies. We found rigid esophagoscopy to be a safe, reliable technique for the removal of such bodies.
