Dr. M. Esin OCAKTAN, a Dr. Recep AKDURa
aHalk Sağlığı ABD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA The effect of nonionizing electromagnetic radiation is gaining importance in our daily life as cellular phones and base stations are included more into our lives. The effects of this fast development in technology cause great concern and curiosity among public and scientific community. In this article, following an initial technical information, studies regarding the effects of electromagnetic radiation on public health will be reviewed.
The effects of cellular phone technology on health may be grouped as direct and indirect. Studies on the health effect of radiofrequency or cellular phone suggest that the direct effects are focused on cancer, reproductive system, cardiovascular system, cataract, and symptoms like headache, while the indirect effects are on traffic accidents.
The possible effects of cellular phones and base stations are strongly related to the frequency of the use of such equipment, the status and proficiency of the person, home and office environment, time and geography. The results of the studies on adverse effects of radiofrequency are not consistent; however, suspects on this issue still exist. Therefore, planning of detailed research on this subject, definition and application of legal limitations, pursue of studies are vital. Additionally, it is important to inform public on the possible adverse effects of electromagnetic radiation and to promote precautions for the use of equipment generating radiation. Keywords: Cellular phone; radiation, nonionizing; environment and public healthTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2008, 28:58-65
