Modern design-based stereological methods are widely used in most of the scientific branches. They are generally methods of choice because of their purported freedom from assumption and bias as well as their efficiency and feasiblility. Although these methods were initially introduced as unbiased with regard to any possible error source, there has been a growing concern. Recent studies suggest that some amount of bias could be introduced due to a range of factors. These factors, including the method of choice and sectioning-embedding procedures, are briefly reviewed in the present study. Although these methods are not completely unbiased and error-free, researchers can minimize these errors with a minimum of additional effort.Keywords: Stereology, embedding media,counting methods, error sourcesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:78-87
