The Effects Of Apoptosis And Melatonin Levels On Aging
Dr.Hakan PARLAKPINAR,a Dr.Mustafa KOÇ,a Dr.Ahmet ACETa
aFarmakoloji AD, İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, MALATYA Apoptosis, also known as a programmed cell death, is an indispensable component of normal human growth, immunoregulation and homeostasis. Knowledge of the molecular mechanism of apoptosis is providing insights into the causes of multiple pathologies where aberrant cell death regulation is manifest. Aging is characterized by a progressive deterioration in physiological functions and metabolic processes, ultimately leading to morbidity and mortality. Although many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the aging process, the exact mechanisms are not well-defined. Recently accumulating evidence indicates that dysregulation of the apoptotic process may be involved in some aging processes. It has been concluded that apoptosis plays an important role in the aging process and tumorigenesis. In addition, melatonin, chief secretory product of the pineal gland, is a direct free radical scavenger and indirect antioxidant. As such, it would appear to be advantageous to test melatonin in clinical trials for the prevention of possible damaged and dysfunctional cells associated with aging. Keywords: Apoptosis, melatonin, agingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:62-67
