In so doing, we aimed to increase the specificity and sensitivity of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of SI joint pathologies.
Material and Methods: Between the years 2001-2002, both SI joints of total of 140 (70 females, 70 males) patients without SI joint complaint were measured (length and width of SI joints and dimensions of joint surface sclerosis on coronal CT images). In all cases according to age, weight, height and sex, the results of the measurements were compared and analyzed statistically with student-t and correlation tests.
Results: According to sex group statistical analysis, bilateral SI joint lengths were longer in males than in females. There were no differences in either surface sclerosis or in SI joint width when the female and male groups were compared. According to age group statistical analysis, SI joint length and surface sclerosis of SI joints significantly increased, but SI joint width significantly decreased dependent to age. According to height and weight statistical analysis, SI joint length increased and joint width decreased significantly, while SI joint surface sclerosis mildly increased with regard height and weight, but there was no significant difference between them.
Conclusion: Measurements of SI joint length width surface sclerosis and determination of normal distribution according to various parameters can be beneficial in differentiating normal cases from patients with SI joint pathologies. Furthermore, these values may increase the sensitivity and specificity of CT in the assesment of diagnosis of SI joint pathologies. Keywords: Sacroiliac joint, computed tomographyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2004, 24:26-34
