Objective: Air insufflation to obtain a better visualization during colonoscopy can cause painful abdominal distantion during and after the procedure. It is still controversial whether the decompression of insufflated air after colonoscopy decreases post-procedural pain or not. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether aspiration of air from the flexion points of the colon or the rectum had any effect on post-procedural pain.
Material and Methods: Eighty-three patients who were admitted or referred to the Gaziosmanpaşa University Medical School, Department of General Surgery for diagnostic colonoscopy were enrolled in the study. Insufflated air during colonoscopy was aspirated only from the rectum in group 1 (control group), and both from the flexures and the rectum in group 2. The patients were asked to specify the pain just after the procedure and 30 minutes later by using a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS).
Results: Mean ages of the patients were 52.11 ± 15.08 and 46.00 ± 14.92 in the control and study groups, respectively (p= 0.08). Nineteen (51.35%) of 37 patients in the control group and 16 of 39 patients in the study group were females (p= 0.366). Median VAS score was 56 (19-95) in the control group and 48 (15-92) in the study group just after the procedure (p= 0.316), and 33 (8-60) and 37 (10-75) 30 minutes later respectively (p= 0.057).
Conclusion: Aspiration of the insufflated air during colonoscopy from the rectum or the flexures of the colon had no effect on post-procedural pain.
