aİç Hastalıkları ABD, bİç Hastalıkları ABD, Klinik İmmünoloji ve Romatoloji BD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA A variety of clinically significant bi-directional interactions occurs between neoplastic and autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. Some autoimmune and rheumatic diseases are associated with an increased incidence of specific neoplasms. Conversely, many neoplasms by a variety of mechanisms can cause or simulate many autoimmune and rheumatic manifestations/clinical pictures. These features may be the result of generation of autoantibodies, paraneoplastic syndromes, direct infiltration of the bone, joint and muscles or indirect infiltration by the tumor cells or combination chemotherapy.
A high index of suspicion by both the primary care physicians and specialists will enhance the probability of detecting cancer in patients who present with rheumatologic complaints or with systemic autoimmune disorders occurring as paraneoplastic manifestations. Early diagnoses of cancer may be possible through enhanced awareness of cancer-associated rheumatic syndromes.
This paper reviews the types of interactions between autoimmune and rheumatic conditions and neoplastic diseases and their clinical manifestations. Keywords: Rheumatic diseases; paraneoplastic syndromesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:601-609
